Honor your mother, your sister, your wife, your girlfriend, and all the women in your life on Sunday, March 8, International Women’s Day.

In the United States, 1909 marked the first National Women’s Day when thousands of women marched for suffrage and social equality in New York City. When the recognition spread to socialist movements in Europe and Russia the following year, the United States no longer acknowledged the day due to American anti-socialist fervor (1). Today, millions of women, not just socialists, around the world celebrate International Women’s Day every March 8, from Europe to Asia to Africa to Australia and to North and South America.

The Women’s Liberation Movement of the 1960s-70s revived the celebration here and began recognizing March as Women’s History Month. But International Women’s Day remains more popular elsewhere.

Take Action

Sometime in March

  1. Support women-owned businesses in Tuolumne County.
  2. Watch inspiring films: Hidden Figures, On the Basis of Sex, Erin Brockovich, etc.
  3. Gather a few women for a lunch date and tell a few short stories of pioneering women.
  4. Write a letter to the editor about a woman in Tuolumne County.
